Christmas gift quilts

Friday, January 5, 2018

This year, I've gifted 5 quilts (7 counting two quilts gifted for last Christmas). I quilted one for my mom-in-law who literally keeps our house running, and another backed in soft minky for my sister-in-law who lives in Colorado Springs (minky seems pretty fitting with their cold winters!). I've just hit a point where I love creating + quilting, but we don't use all of the quilts I make, so it's much more fun to branch out into fabric choices that I know family will love and gift to them.

For my MIL's quilt, I used all fabric from my stash (the best!). I went with a jelly bean pattern by Thimble Blossoms, using Farmhouse by Fig Tree & Co for her quilt top and a Bonnie & Camille flannel print from their Miss Kate line. I quilted it with a small filigree pattern, and (of course) Haley hand bound it for me. My MIL absolutely loved it, and I think it turned out absolutely perfect for her.

For my SIL's quilt, I also went with a layer cake from my stash for a Moda Love quilt. I used the Tinsel line from Cotton + Steel which I'd been hoarding for a couple of years, but I knew that Maddie and Clay would love it and use it more than we would. I love that quilt top because it comes together so fast, and it so easy to make (just double check your pieces all face the right way!). I backed it in grey minky (our favorite) and quilted it using Christmas Lights. I machine bound it because minky... and used some leftover black sprinkle from Cotton + Steel that I had from my Moda Building Blocks quilt. My in-laws went to Colorado Springs for Christmas and hand delivered it for me. It was so sweet to be able to FaceTime them while they opened it, and absolutely loved it.

I honestly think gifting quilts is even more fun than keeping them. I'm already adding a few quilts in to be gifted this new year in my to-sew list, and am so excited.
